The dnsbl.sorbs.net Spam Filter

For different reasons, the list "dnsbl.sorbs.net" can have one of our mail servers blacklisted, and they demand we pay a fine before it can be removed.

To say the least, this is very unusual as we work with Spam Cop, ORDB, Spam Haus and AOL which are some of the most respected and reliable blacklist providers on the Internet.

Standard practice for these proviers is to 'blacklist' a Web Host or ISP that it feels is responsible for SPAM. This is communicated to the offending host or ISP which then must find and fix the issue to be removed off the list.

The way the Sorbs list works is they want you to pay a $50.00 fine to be removed. If they receive another complaint, you will be re-listed and then you must pay another fine.

When we are informed by one of the respected blacklists that a site hosted here is sending unsolicited spam, the domain gets turned off per zero policy for SPAM and our terms of service.

Fortunately, most Internet Service Providers and Hosting Providers do not work with Sorbs. However, if you are having a problem related to a provider using Sorbs, you can have the client that you are trying to send mail to contact their Internet Service Provider. They should ask them not to use the Sorbs list, and you can even use this information as a reference for them. Most ISPs will not use the Sorbs list after finding out this information.

First, close the email client. Open the antivirus options/settings. Turn off all options that check sending or receiving mail for viruses, apply and close. Some anti-virus clients change the mail server path in order to check for viruses. Open the email client and verify that the email server settings are correct:

Usually, this setting is under tools/email accounts/properties. Default settings for POP/IMAP are mail.yourDomainName.com and for SMTP is mail.yourDomainName.com or your Internet Service Providers SMTP server, apply and close the window.

At this point, test sending and receiving, if the anti-virus software was the cause of the problem, you should be able to send an email to yourself. Finally, open the antivirus options/settings and turn back on the options to check sending and receiving email for viruses.

How to Set Up Your Trusted Senders List

Email addresses (ex: joe@example.com) or entire domain names (ex: example.com) can be added to your list of trusted senders (or white list). When email comes in from a trusted sender, all spam filtering for that email will be bypassed.

You can manually add email addresses or domain names to the Trusted Senders list at the Domain level or the Individual level.

Adding Trusted Senders at the Domain Level
You will need to be logged into SmarterMail as the primary or an administrative user to configure this level. Changes made here affect the whole domain and blankets over every address created.

1. Log in to the WebControlCenter and access Mail--Mail Admin and click the 'Login as Admin' link or log in to your mail account at http://mail.yourdomain.com (replace 'yourdomain.com' with your actual domain).

2. Once logged into SmarterMail, go to SETTINGS > DOMAIN SETTINGS > SPAM FILTERING, then click the “Trusted Senders” tab.

3. Under the Trusted Senders tab, enter the email addresses and/or domains below that will skip spam checking. Enter one email address or domain name per line. Once you are done adding to the list, click Save.

Adding Trusted Senders at the Individual Level
All email users have access to this with the SmarterMail web interface for their own account. This will add these trusted senders to just this mail account and not all accounts for the domain.

1. Log in to the WebControlCenter and access Mail--Mail Admin. Click the 'Login as User' link or log in to your mail account at http://mail.yourdomain.com (replace 'yourdomain.com' with your actual domain).

2. Once logged into SmarterMail, go to SETTINGS > MY SETTINGS > FILTERING > SPAM FILTERING, then click the “Trusted Senders” tab.

3. Under the Trusted Senders tab, enter the email addresses and/or domains below that will skip spam checking. Enter one email address or domain name per line. Once you are done adding to the list, click Save.

Please note: normal content filtering rules will still be followed. Any emails that you "unmark as spam" will add the sender to your trusted senders list automatically.

This includes the email, headers, attachments (if applicable) and any space needed for the message to be encoded (which can sometimes increase the size by 20-30%). Therefore, the largest attachments you may be able to add to an email should be about 7-8MB in size.
